Knowing Your "Need to Know"
In an effort to regain some control over your life at exactly the time it seems to be falling apart, examine your own need for information and set about finding it. Some individuals require every answer known to humankind regarding breast cancer; others become frightened as they explore the world of statistics and biology. If you are among the former, there is a wealth of material to sate the most curious; if you are among the latter, determine how much information you require and supplement it with other sources of support.
I gathered a wealth of information about breast cancer only to discover that it heightened my anxiety. I already knew I was in trouble, I didn't need statistics to prove it. I personally found solace and support in the writings of cancer survivors as well as members of healing ministries. I attended a number of lectures and workshops on healing sponsored by the medical profession as well as the Christian community.
There is a wealth of information available on breast cancer. Organizations such as the American Cancer Society, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and Y-Me offer up-to-date information on research and treatment. They provide an assortment of support choices. Don't overlook local medical centers, medical schools, and universities as sources for additional information.
