Breast Cancer Guide
Discovering a Lump
The majority of women who have breast cancer discover the lump themselves. Know your family's health history, routinely practice self-exams, see your doctor annually, and follow the recommended guidelines for mammography. If you find a suspicious lump, don't delay in seeing your physician. For your own peace of mind, insist on appointments for mammograms and/or ultrasounds as soon as possible.
I discovered the lump in my breast while preparing for my shower. I had been conscientious about my yearly physicals, mammograms, and self-exams. I knew immediately that something was out of the ordinary. Within twelve hours I had a mammogram followed by an ultrasound; within five days I was seated before my surgeon for further tests and diagnosis. The rapidity with which I was seen and treated did much to allay the anxiety that most women experience when they first discover a suspicious lump.
